Day 5 Fort Herkimer to Frankford
A 12 mile walk today. We started our day early at Fort Hamilton Church. Built in 1753, Fort Herkimer Church is one of the oldest churches in New York and is the oldest building in Herkimer County. It is one of the most historically important buildings in the Mohawk Valley and the only remaining structure of Fort Herkimer. During the Revolutionary War, it was used as a defensive structure with a swivel gun mounted on the tower.
The walk today began on canal, and ended up walking the last 4 miles on Route 5. We walk the Villages of Mohawk, Illion, and Frankfort. We ended up at a nice Airbnb for one night and head to Utica tomorrow.
